MPA – The Association of Magazine Media Announces the Kelly Awards Finalists!
MPA has announced the finalists in the 2017 Kelly Awards to honor the creative spirit of excellence and innovation in the art of advertising in magazine media. The Kelly Awards are given to agency creative teams, advertising clients and magazine media publishers whose campaigns demonstrate both creative excellence and effectiveness in meeting campaign objectives. “The Kelly Award finalists utilized many innovative methods to produce highly effective advertising campaigns—ranging from augmented reality apps, to adult coloring books, to comedy shows—all while employing print as a major component of the campaign,” said Linda Thomas Brooks, president and chief executive officer, MPA – The Association of Magazine Media. “Independent studies prove that magazines deliver the highest return on advertising spend, so we’re pleased to see advertisers capitalizing on this research in such creative ways.”
Byron Dobell, ASME Hall of Famer Whose Editing Helped Change Journalism, Dies at 89
Byron Dobell, an editor at Time-Life, Esquire and New York magazine who played a pivotal role in the careers of Tom Wolfe, Mario Puzo and other writers, died on Saturday at his home in Manhattan. He was 89. He was inducted into the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame in 1998.
Google Has Banned 200 Publishers Since It Passed a New Policy Against Fake News
Google kicked 200 publishers off one of its ad networks in the fourth quarter, partly in response to the proliferation of fake news sites. The company banned the publishers from its AdSense network, an ad placement service that automatically serves text and display ads on participating sites based on its audience. The ban was part of an update to an existing policy that prohibits sites that mislead users with their content.

Ozy Media Raises $10 Million, Expands Staff, Video
Online news start-up Ozy Media has raised $10 million in series C funding, which will go to doubling its staff, as well as expanding its events business and video production. In 2014, Ozy Media was valued at an estimated $120 million, after Axel Springer invested $20 million to increase its stake to 16%, according to The Wall Street Journal.
