State Efforts to Regulate Marketing Techniques Get an Early Start
February 14, 2014
Not even a month into 2014, legislators in several states are already holding hearings on bills that would impose burdensome regulations on negative option offers.
A bill in Maryland would, among other things, require a consumer to provide a written signature in order for a subscription to renew. In Massachusetts, a publisher would be required to provide a consumer enjoying a free trial a second notice shortly before being charged for a subscription. Both of these bills have been considered and successfully defeated by MPA in previous legislative sessions. We will, once again, work hard to see that they do not advance.
